Environment & Sustainability
Kākahuria te whenua, kākahuria te moana
Guided by the principles of kaitiakitanga, the Toi Taiao team drives initiatives that ensure the health and sustainability of the whenua, moana , and all living ecosystems. By working closely with whānau and external partners, the team focuses on delivering environmental projects that uphold the cultural, spiritual, and ecological values of Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei, ensuring that the iwi’s taonga are preserved for future generations. Through a holistic approach, Toi Taiao integrates mātauranga Māori with modern environmental practices to foster positive outcomes for the people, culture, and environment.
About Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei
We are the tangata whenua of Tāmaki with our mana over the land and sea being underpinned by take tūpuna (ancestral relationships), take raupatu (taking of the land and sea by traditional warfare), ahi kā (unbroken occupation) and tuku whenua (traditional gifting of land ).
Ko au te tangata whenua o Tāmaki pokapū me Te Waitematā. He take tupuna, he take raupatu, he ahi kā, he tuku whenua, te takenga mai o tōku rangatiratanga, ki runga o Te Kahu Tōpuni o Tuperiri e hora ake nei.
