Summer Marine Ranger

As a Summer Ranger - Marine (10 roles available) working in the Marine District, this role focuses on public engagement, education, and advocacy to promote marine protected areas and protected species. You will be working on the frontline, interacting with visitors and local communities to encourage responsible behaviour and support compliance outcomes.

You will be mentored by a dedicated Supervisor, and work closely with Marine Community Rangers, Marine Protection Rangers and the wider DOC team. This fixed-term role will commence in mid-November 2026 and conclude in February 2027.

Supervisor Marine Advocacy

This role supervises our seasonal Rangers who work to ensure that Members of the public are aware of the new Marine Protected Areas, throughout the Hauraki Gulf / Tīkapa Moana. Your rangers will be at Marine Reserves, community events, boat ramps and retailers answering questions from the public, sharing why marine protections are needed, alongside observing and reporting compliance issues as required. This fixed-term role will commence in mid-September 2026 and conclude in February 2027.

We are looking for an experienced, adaptable people-leader to supervise a team of up to eleven seasonal staff, who are distributed from Warkworth to Whitianga. As a supervisor, you’ll be responsible for delivery of the work plan, team resourcing and capability, people leadership, relationship-building, training, reporting and providing general support for your field-based team. Some days you’ll be in the field, others in the office, but you’ll be making a difference every day.

This role will report to and have support from the Principal Ranger for this program, along with a team of permanent staff. Induction and training are provided.

Supervisor (Marine) (Fixed-Term)

Principal Ranger

The Department of Conservation Te Papa Atawhai (DOC) works to protect and restore the natural spaces and species of Aotearoa. This role offers a unique opportunity to help safeguard the Hauraki Gulf Marine Park — Aotearoa’s first marine park and the only national park of the sea. Covering 1.4 million hectares, the Gulf is an internationally significant marine environment and a vital seabird and whale habitat, located alongside our most populous city.

You’ll contribute to the landmark Hauraki Gulf / Tīkapa Moana Marine Protection Act, part of the wider Revitalising the Gulf programme and the first legislation of its kind in Aotearoa.

Reporting to the Operations Manager, the Principal Ranger leads a distributed team of 10 marine protection rangers and additional contract and casual staff, including highly specialised skippers and divers. You’ll provide exceptional leadership, patience, and organisational skills as the team builds and maintains these complex operational capabilities.
