Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei is a hapū of Ngāti Whātua. We live in and around the Tāmaki isthmus. We hold to our mana motuhake, our history, our culture, our identity, and our reo. Our whakapapa traces to Tuperiri and the hapū Ngā Oho, Te Taoū, and Te Uringutu.
We are tangata whenua in Tāmaki. Our authority over land and sea rests on take tupuna, take raupatu, ahi kā, and tuku whenua.
Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei Trust looks after the collective affairs of our hapū. We have more than 8,000 registered members across Aotearoa and overseas. Ōrākei Marae is our cultural hub.
Te Kahu Tōpuni o Tuperiri describes the protective reach of our ancestor across our rohe.
Purpose of the role
Working collaboratively with uri, whānau, hapū, educators and partners, this role leads the design, development and delivery of Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei centred curriculum and educational resources for kura and early learning centres within Te Kahu Tōpuni o Tuperiri.
The role ensures that teaching and learning are grounded in Ngāti Whātua mātauranga, reo, histories, and tikanga, supporting culturally grounded learning pathways from early childhood through kura. This mahi strengthens iwi-led education approaches and contributes to uri success.
You will work closely with kura, kaiako and community partners to support the implementation of iwi-based programmes, resources and learning initiatives that reflect the aspirations of Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei.
Ngā tino pūkenga/whēako | Qualifications & Experience
Essential:
5+ years’ experience in an array of educational contexts and sectors
Understanding of education from a Māori perspective
Understanding of the inequities for Māori tauira and how these can be addressed Recent experience in the education profession
Māori Medium, cultural leadership, Māori pedagogies, and other affiliations to this field
Desirable:
Registered teacher

Curriculum & Resource Development - Design and develop Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei-centred curriculum and learning resources that reflect iwi narratives, mātauranga, reo and tikanga.
Programme Delivery & Engagement - Support kura and early learning centres to implement iwi-based curriculum through workshops, wānanga and collaborative learning programmes with kaiako and ākonga.
Collaboration & Community Engagement - Work alongside educators, uri, whānau and hapū to ensure programmes reflect iwi aspirations and strengthen culturally grounded learning pathways.
Quality, Compliance & Professional Development - Maintain professional standards, contribute to quality frameworks, and ensure programmes align with organisational policies and education frameworks.
